Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Diagnosis:
Dr. Harvey has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has performed over 300 PTSD evaluations since 2009 on behalf of the VA Compensation and Pension Program.
PTSD is not limited to veterans.
Traumas occur in a variety of forms to civilians as well, such as sexual assault, physical or emotional abuse, motor vehicle accidents, crimes, and fires. First responders are at risk because of the repeated traumas to which they are exposed. In short, any situation that is beyond the realm of usual human experience can result in PTSD.
Prolonged Exposure Therapy:
PTSD is in essence an anxiety disorder.
Treatment of anxiety typically involves confronting the fears. Dr. Harvey employs a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy called Prolonged Exposure Therapy or PET. PTSD is a chronic disorder without a known cure so treatment involves helping you better manage your symptoms and function more successfully.
PET is a two-pronged approach.
Therapy begins by telling your stories to the therapist in a safe environment. Retelling the stories makes them less toxic and your symptoms better controlled. Secondly, most people with PTSD avoid some conversations, places, or activities related to the traumas. You and Dr. Harvey will negotiate ways to decrease those things you avoid.
